Types of Contact Lenses

We carry a wide variety of contact lens types in order to satisfy the vision needs of a wide range of patients in Dallas-Fort Worth, Hurst, Roanoke, and Woodland Springs. Each type has its own unique features, advantages and disadvantages.

Soft Contact Lenses

These are the most popular type worn in the US. Generally, they are comfortable within seconds after you insert them into your eyes. Effective for many eye conditions and vision prescriptions, soft contacts are made from a flexible material that conforms to your eyeball. This allows them to stay in place well on your eyes, even if you lead a very active lifestyle. Many people with astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and presbyopia enjoy the comfort and quality of soft contact lenses.

Soft lenses come in disposable, daily wear, and extended wear versions. Disposables are worn throughout the day, and removed and discarded at night. The greatest benefit of these lenses is that they never need rinsing or disinfecting. Our patients who don’t wear contacts every day love the versatility of disposable lenses! Weekly and monthly types are also available.

Daily wear soft contact lenses are worn during daytime and removed at bedtime. They must be rinsed and disinfected at the end of each day. In contrast, extended wear lenses can be worn while sleeping, typically for a week at a time. You need to sterilize them only once a week, which is associated with an increased risk of eye infection.

Hard, Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses (GP)

When soft lenses cannot provide clear, high quality vision or comfortable wearing, hard lenses are often the next step. Rigid gas permeable lenses are highly effective at giving great vision for many challenging eye conditions. With high oxygen permeability, GP lenses are breathable, which lowers the risk of eye infections. There is usually a short period of adaptation to get used to these lenses. Most hard lenses must be sterilized every night, and when cared for properly – they can last a few years.

Specialty Contact Lenses

Have you been told in the past that you can’t wear contact lenses due to having astigmatism, presbyopia or keratoconus? With so many specialty lenses out there, this is no longer true! Our optometrists will consider your unique needs and take the time to match your hard-to-fit vision condition with the best specialty contact lenses. Depending upon your prescription, we may recommend toric lenses for astigmatism, hybrid lenses, bifocals/multifocals, or scleral lenses for keratoconus.
