Glaucoma

Glaucoma vs. Normal Eye First Eye Care Offers Glaucoma Treatment

Health experts recommend regular eye exams to maintain vision and protect eye health. During your annual eye exam, your Woodland Springs optometrist will check your eyes for signs of eye diseases like glaucoma that can cause vision loss if left untreated. This measure allows the eye doctor to detect these problems at an early stage, when treatment can be most effective. At First Eye Care, detection of eye disease is a routine part of each eye exam, and your optometrist can provide treatment of glaucoma and other eye diseases, if needed.

Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that involves increased pressure within the eyes. It is a progressive disease that worsens over time and can lead to blindness. Fortunately, early detection and treatment can slow the progress of the disease, so that vision is preserved. To diagnose glaucoma, your Woodland Springs optometrist will use devices that measure intraocular pressure, visual field loss, optical angle, corneal thickness and view optical nerve damage.

Glaucoma Treatment

Treatment of glaucoma can help to slow the vision loss that is characteristic of the disease. Generally, patients with glaucoma are given eye drops that help to improve drainage from the eyes or reduce the amount of fluid produced. Prostaglandin medications increase the flow of fluid out of the eyes to reduce pressure. Beta blocker medications reduce the amount of fluid that is produced. Alpha-adrenergic agonist drugs both decrease the amount of fluid and improve drainage. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors or cholinergic agents may also be prescribed. In some cases, laser therapy, drainage tubes or electrocautery is needed to reduce pressure in the eyes. Surgery may be needed for severe cases.
