Vision Therapy

Vision therapy is a non-surgical, customized program that is designed to correct vision problems in both children and adults. While eyeglasses and contact lenses are a great solution to help those suffering from common vision problems, they are not always enough. Vision therapy aims to teach the visual system how to correct itself, instead of relying on other devices to do the job for our eyes. You can think of vision therapy as physical therapy for the visual system.

Scleral Contact Lens Fitting

We see many patients at our First Eye Care centers that have been told they cannot wear contact lenses because of an irregular cornea or other problems of the eye. However, that is simply not the case. Scleral contact lenses are a great option for those who have large or irregular corneas. This is because they are large-diameter gas permeable contacts, which are specially-designed to envelop the entire surface of the cornea and sit on the white of the eye (sclera). These specialty lenses are designed to replace the irregular cornea with a smooth optical surface, correcting any vision problems caused by this condition at the same time.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is one of the most common age-related eye conditions. This eye disease results in blurred near vision and usually starts at around the age of 40. Anyone, including those who have never had vision troubles before, are at risk of developing presbyopia. Even individuals who are already nearsighted may notice their vision is starting to blur when wearing contact lenses or their usual eyeglasses. Some of the first things you will notice if presbyopia is developing is that you have to squint or hold reading materials at arm’s length in order to help your eyes focus. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to lower your risk of developing presbyopia.

Pediatric Eye Exam

Adults aren’t the only ones who need annual eye exams. In fact, pediatric eye exams are one of the most important services offered here at First Eye Care. According to industry experts, 5 to 10 % of preschoolers and nearly 25% of school-aged children have some type of vision problem. The American Optometric Association (AOA) states that infants should have their first eye exam at six months. After that initial exam, children should have an eye exam at three years old, and then again at age five or six (right before they enter kindergarten). School-aged children should have an eye exam every other year to ensure there are no vision problems present.

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology – or ortho-k for short – is a non-surgical procedure that uses specially-designed contact lenses to reshape the curvature of the eye. Performed here at First Eye Care, Ortho-K helps improve vision, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses. This innovative technique gently reshapes your eye while you are sleeping. All you have to do is put the specially-fitted lenses in before you go to bed. By the time you wake up in the morning, you will have clear, sharp vision for all your waking hours! This treatment is safe, effective, and proven to work, making it one of the most popular treatments offered by your First Eye Care team.

Ocular Diseases

Ocular diseases are those that affect the eye health and vision in patients of all different ages. While the majority of ocular diseases the general population is familiar with affect older adults, this is not to say younger, healthy individuals are not at risk. Here at First Eye Care, we treat and diagnose a wide range of common eye diseases. Eye disease is a very blanket term that refers to the group of diseases that impact the function of the eye. The best way to treat these common conditions is to visit your eye doctor on an annual basis. Early detection is absolutely key here.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration (MD) is one of the most common eye disorders affecting older Americans. In fact, an estimated 13 million Americans are impacted by MD, which is more people than both glaucoma and cataracts combined. MD is also the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 55, with a new case diagnosed every three minutes. One of the best ways to prevent MD from developing is by getting a comprehensive eye exam. Because this particular eye disease occurs when there are changes to the macula (the part of the retina found inside the back layer of the eye), early detection is key. Unfortunately, the majority of age-related MD cases are considered the “dry” form, for which there is no cure or treatment. Wet macular degeneration, albeit less common, may be treated with laser procedures and medication injections if caught early on.

Glaucoma

The term ‘glaucoma’ refers to a group of diseases that impact the eye’s optic nerve, resulting in serious damage like vision loss and blindness. Most people develop glaucoma over time as fluid builds up in the front part of the eye, resulting in increased pressure and damage to the optic nerve. The good news is that glaucoma is very treatable with early detection. That being said, it is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 60.
