What Is Ortho-k And How Does It Work?

Orthokeratology (also commonly known as ortho-K) is a means of vision correction that does not require any type of invasive surgery or procedure. Specifically, ortho-K works through the use of special contact lenses that are designed to carefully reshape the lens of the eye to improve vision quality.

The contact lenses are worn nightly and, when removed in the morning, the patient is able to go through the day without the need for corrective lenses such as contacts or glasses. In many cases, patients who undergo ortho-K treatment are able to achieve 20/20 vision in as little as a few days!

Is Ortho-k Right For You?

Ortho-K is a great solution for those who are tired of wearing corrective eyewear but who are not viable candidates for LASIK. Furthermore, those who do not like the idea of undergoing an invasive procedure such as LASIK could benefit from consulting with an eye doctor to find out whether or not ortho-K is right for them.

Unfortunately, not everybody who wears corrective lenses will be an ideal candidate for ortho-K. Because ortho-K lenses focus on re-shaping the lenses of the eyes, this specific treatment is best for those who have vision conditions related to an abnormal eye or lens curvature. Some common examples of vision conditions that can often be corrected through ortho-K include:

  • nearsightedness
  • farsightedness
  • astigmatism

For those who are viable candidates, ortho-K is often a much more affordable treatment alternative to LASIK surgery and can be used with even younger children.
