The Benefits of Using Orthokeratology - First Eye Care DFW

Ortho-K is a Great, Noninvasive Treatment Option for Myopia

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, is a groundbreaking treatment that relies on special lenses to treat vision loss from refractive errors and corneal problems. One of the most important steps taken in the eye care industry, ortho-k fits a patient with customized gas permeable contact lenses that are designed to be worn overnight. While you are counting sheep and dreaming deep, the lenses help reshape the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye). When the lenses are removed the following morning, you should be able to see much clearer than before.

At First Eye Care DFW, we have had great success treating patients with ortho-k. This is a non-invasive treatment option that allows the patient to have clear vision without needing to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses throughout the day. We have found that even those who have been wearing contacts or glasses for years find success with ortho-k.

Benefits of Ortho-K

Ortho-k has given those with vision problems a new option that is less obtrusive and extremely effective. There are numerous incredible benefits of ortho-k for patients of all ages, such as:

  • The technology used allows for the lenses to be made to specifically fit the patient’s eyes.
  • Thanks in part to the customization, ortho-k lenses are more reliable and comfortable than other lenses.
  • They can correct refractive errors overnight.
  • They work to reshape the cornea while you sleep, allowing you to see better during the day.
  • The effects of wearing the lenses at night will last throughout the following day.
  • This is a non-surgical option to help correct vision.
  • It is perfectly safe, as long as you follow the care instructions for your lenses.

Before the special lenses are fitted for you, your First Eye Care DFW optometrist will measure the curvature of your corneas then create a topographical map of the surface of your eyes. It is completely normal to experience some discomfort when first wearing ortho-k lenses. However, after a couple of nights, you will get used to them, and they will become virtually unnoticeable.

Am I a Good Candidate for Orthokeratology?

Generally, any individual who has been diagnosed with mild to moderate myopia (nearsightedness) is a good candidate for ortho-k. We often recommend ortho-k for kids, as the lenses help reshape the cornea without the annoyance of wearing lenses 24/7. Children, teenagers, and adults who are not good candidates for LASIK or refractive surgery may benefit from ortho-k.

Additionally, if you are an active individual who plays sports or works outdoors, ortho-k may be a great solution. While ortho-k’s goal is to give the patient 20/20 vision, in many cases, 20/40 vision (the minimum requirement to be able to drive) is satisfactory.

If you have any additional questions about the benefits or ortho-k or whether it is a good option for you, be sure and check out our FAQs blog and then give us a call. If you are looking for a corrective option other than eyeglasses, daily contacts, or surgery, ortho-k may be for you. Please contact First Eye Care DFW today for more information.
